Understand & Explain Pain

February 16 - 17 (Tuesday-Wednesday)
Day 1 Tuesday - Registration: 7:30 am - Course: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Day 2 Wednesday - 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
14.5 C.E. hours

Presenter: Dr. Lorimer Moseley, PHD, B.APP.SC.(PHTY) (HONS)

This two-day course is the culmination of several years of research into pain physiology education as a management strategy for people in pain. The first day is primarily lecture format and covers paradigms of pain, conceptual models for understanding the complex psychoneurobiology of pain, current thought about the effects of persistent pain, including effects on the brain, the rationale for teaching patients with persistent pain about the biology of pain; recent advances in the evidence for the efficacy of doing this and the mechanisms by which its effects may be mediated. The second day focuses on the clinical application of the information. Participants will be introduced to the conceptual change pathway, from metaphors and stories to biological concepts and management implications. Pain physiology education is presented as it is to patients. As permitted, there will be time for questions, discussion and case studies. This course will be of great use to anyone wanting to understand modern pain concepts and a must for people who treat patients with chronic pain.

Objectives:
  1. Understand the history of the structural pathology model of pain and the evidence underpinning it.
  2. Understand why the structural pathology model of pain is no longer supported by scientific evidence.
  3. Understand a new conceptualisation of pain as a conscious protective mechanism associated with the implicit perception of threat to body tissue.
  4. Understand the scientific evidence underpinning this conceptualisation.
  5. Understand the difference between nociception and pain.
  6. Understand the neurobiological processes that underpin nociception (i) in the periphery and (ii) in the spinal cord.
  7. Understand the conceptual neurobiology that underpins pain.
  8. Understand the biology, conceptual and functional significance of peripheral sensitisation, central sensitisation and cortical sensitivity.
  9. Be familiar with the evidence concerning investigating the use of Explaining Pain as a therapeutic tool.
  10. Be comfortable with the notion of explaining pain to patients in a biologically accurate manner, including the role of explaining pain within a wider paradigm of clinical reasoning.
  11. Be aware of new treatments that are being developed and tested for chronic pain states.
